What is the 64-bit power and how to get it set up in the right way?

64-bit stands for 64 bits per cycle. Each computer can process a certain amount of bits per cycle and this factor is one of the most countable when it comes to the processing power of a machine.

Imagine yourself picking up golf balls. Assume you can hold 5 of them in your hand at a time. You have a whole field of the balls to pick up and throw them in a bin. And now imagine if you could use both hands and the amount of balls that you could pick up at a time will be doubled.

The same process happens when we look at the 32-bit VS 64-bit machines. The amount of data that can be processed per cycle is doubled; consequently the speed is significantly increased, BUT WAIT…

What if you technically can use both of your hands to pick up the golf balls, but you are limited by something else to use one hand at a time. Consequently, ability to use both hands doesn’t help.

Back to computers, exactly the same situation can be observed on the majority of modern machines sold to you in stores. You buy a great computer that is priced like most other machines on the market, but somehow it’s slower than your friend’s machine that he bought half a year ago. What’s the problem you might ask.

The problem is that most of the computers sold right now are coming with the 32-bit version of the operating system. It can be any operating system, but if it’s not 64-bit your computer will not be using it’s ”another hand” to significantly increase the processing speed. Operating system is like a bridge between your computer and the software that you use every day. A 64-bit operating system like Microsoft Windows XP x64 Edition, Microsoft Windows Vista x64 Edition or Fedora 8 Linux x64 edition will be the type of system you need to use in order to get the most from your computer.

And here another point comes up. Even thought you have installed the 64-bit operation system on your machine, if the version of a specific software that you are using is not 64-bit, “another hand” is not used again and again your machine is not as fast as it could be. So, don’t be just impressed by the (x64) sticker on your brand new computer, but actually know the power of it and get the most of it.

As a conclusion, in this article we have found out that in order to get the best of your 64-bit computer you need to use the operating systems and software that are natively built for 64-bit computers.
